New Products Announced by Crypton and Yamaha at Live Stream Press Event

$

A followup to my own earlier summary of the live stream event, more details are now known of what was announced during the press conference stream held by Crypton and Yamaha.

As mentioned before, several existing Vocaloid products are getting Mac-compatible releases. These Mac versions are denoted by the “NEO” branding in their title. This includes, and may not be limited to: Vocaloid Editor for Cubase (VocaCu), VY1V3, VY2V3, Mew, Zola Project and Aoki Lapis. A Mac-compatible installer for these products will be freely available to current Windows-based Vocaloid users.

Several details of Hatsune Miku V3 and English were revealed. The Japanese version and English version will be sold as separate products, but will come bundled with the same suites of editing and production software. Hatsune Miku English will also be sold internationally.

A slide shown by Hiroyuki Itoh leaked 6 different V3 Hatsune Miku voice banks: Original, Dark, Soft, Sweet, Solid and English. This may not be the finalized list, but it seems likely that a couple of the least popular Appends from Hatsune Miku V2 (Light and Vivid) were dropped. Full details of the products, including pricing and availability, will come sometime in early August.

Crypton also touched on the topic of Meiko V3, confirming that she will also be bundled with a full suite of editing and production software, as well as have a Mac-compatible installer upon release. They also plan to have a Mac installer available for Kaito V3, along with all of their other existing Vocaloid products.

Crypton announced the revamped product page on their website, and they plan to open a “Crypton Channel” on Nicovideo (probably similar to their existing YouTube Channel?). There will also be an upcoming Piapro collaboration this weekend that will be aimed at fans outside of Japan, so stay tuned for that announcement. Lastly, they are working on an new project aimed at creators, the details of which is currently unrevealed.

Thank you to Hightrancesea at Vocaloidism for his more detailed report. Be sure to read it if you want a few laughs.

The Piapro Studio x Piapro Collab for Hatsune Miku V3 Has Begun

$

From July 26th until August 19th at 10:00 AM JST, Piapro will be hosting a community collaboration to produce downloadable content for Hatsune Miku’s Vocaloid3 and Piapro Studio software. The contest is designed to allow artists to create custom image icons for each of Hatsune Miku’s Japanese V3 vocal types in Piapro Studio, as well as custom sample/preview tracks of the voice banks.

The DLC will be optional downloads provided for free to users of Piapro Studio to allow a little customization in how the program looks and sounds.

Section A of the artist collaboration calls for illustrations to be used as Miku’s image icons in Piapro Studio. Submissions are simple, and must follow these guidelines:

1: The illustration of Miku must be 880x880px and jpg format, as seen in this image. Depending on how it’s used, the image may be shrunk as small as 55x55px. Keep this in mind when drawing your illustration.

2: The illustration must use headphones like the ones pictured in rule #1. Drawing them yourself is fine, but make sure to use the ones pictured for reference.

3: Submit your illustration to piapro with the tag “ミクV3_A” (copy and paste without quotes), and make sure the tag remains locked.

Section B of the artist collab is asking for vocal tracks to be featured as the short “sample” of Miku’s voice in Piapro Studio. This may be more difficult, since participation in this collab requires access to Miku’s software and a Vocaloid editor:

1: Create an audio track of Miku containing any short song or phrase of your own creation. The sample must be anywhere between 2~15 seconds in length.

2: Export your sample in VSQ/VSQX and MP3 with no external modifications or background music (instrumental).

3: Submit your MP3 to Piapro with the tag “ミクV3_B” (copy and paste without quotes), and make sure the tag remains locked. Also make sure to attach your VSQ/VSQX file to the submission by adding them to the “related data” folder.

The full event details can be read here, and full event rules can be found here. You may recall from the previous article how Crypton mentioned an upcoming collaboration that would interest overseas fans. I’m suspecting there will be a similar or identical collaboration for English Miku starting this weekend.

On August 26th JST, Hatsune Miku’s V3 Japanese and bundle software packages launched to the world. It has undoubtedly made the largest impact of any previous Vocaloid software release. Many producers waited in eager anticipation to finally receive their orders. But perhaps too many.

The wave of new software owners was so large, it overwhelmed YAMAHA’s Vocaloid software activation server, according to a report by Crypton and YAMAHA. Crypton quickly commented to apologize and state that the product can operate for 14 days without activation, so there was no immediate inconvenience to customers. After a period of time, Yamaha finally managed to fix the server capacity issues.

In celebration of the launch, a new demo was uploaded to the official Hatsune Miku YouTube channel. The song, titled “Happy Rainy Day“, features composition by HachiojiP with the use of V3 Miku’s Soft and Solid vocal styles.

Crypton also released a new Bonus Files pack, which contains various rendered V3 Miku illustrations by iXima, as well as VSQX (Vocaloid3 project data) files of previously released demo songs. These include “Payment” by HeavenzP, and “Six Greetings” by Kikuo. The file can be downloaded at the bottom of the V3 Miku product page from the first orange link.

Additionally, a new video was launched today that features interviews with key members of Crypton staff and Hatsune Miku’s V3 software development. These include Crypton CEO Hiroyuki Itoh, V3 Miku producer Wataru Sasaki, Miku’s voice provider Fujita Saki, Tsuyoshi Kuroda from the Piapro Studio team and more. The road to V3 Miku’s completion faced several new challenges compared to previous software releases.

On November 2nd, it was announced that Crypton Future Media’s CEO, Hiroyuki Ito, was selected to receive the Blue Ribbon Medal of Honor from the Japanese government, making it the 16th Blue Ribbon medal awarded in 132 years. The medal is awarded to “individuals who have made significant achievements in the areas of public welfare or public service”.

Crypton was recognized for the creation of Hatsune Miku, who is now widely considered to be the world’s most-recognized Japanese idol. She helped spark a creative boom that has resulted in a nearly endless amount of derivative works, and allows creative freedoms in a time where media copyrights are becoming more restrictive.

Upon news of the award, Ito commented that it felt odd that a younger person such as himself is now suddenly grouped in with other older and distinguished individuals. More here (Japanese only).

Details of the Snow Miku Sapporo event as well as dates have finally been announced. The first stage of the event is the unveiling of the new Snow Miku tram car, which will be active in Sapporo City between November 18th 2013, and March 28th 2014. The only preview we have so far is the pixelated image below, showing that this year’s tram car will be colored purple.

Visitors will be allowed to preview the completed car a day early on November 17th, and even take pictures (no photography will be allowed inside the car during the operating period). It was also revealed that you can hear Fujita Saki, the voice provider for Hatsune Miku’s software, making special special announcements inside the tram car during operation.

The operation schedule can be found from Sapporo City’s homepage, and updates to the Snow Miku event can be found from the official page: SnowMiku.com. The main Snow Miku Sapporo event is scheduled to run between February 5th and 11th 2014, but further details have yet to be announced.

Today was the 9th anniversary of the release of Meiko’s software, and Crypton decided to use this day to reveal new information about Meiko’s V3 software update, as well as open up preorders (Japan only for now). It has been announced that Meiko’s V3 software will include 5 vocal styles: Power, Straight (original), Dark, Whisper and English (this one was a surprise). The planned launch period is sometime in the first quater of 2014.

The first demo song titled “逆襲のMEIKO” was composed by BingoBongoP, and used the Power vocal style. The second demo is titled “A Certain Night“, and was composed by ゴゼンP using the Straight and Power voice styles.

Crypton is also holding an anniversary celebration on Karent with several new albums featuring Meiko, as well as a wallpaper download. So go check it out.

SEGA didn’t want to miss out either, and is offering two wallpapers for download: A Project Mirai 2nd themed wallpaper, and one based on Project Diva Arcade: Future Tone. You can grab both from their official blog post.

J-rock band BUMP OF CHICKEN has released their newest song, 「ray」 featuring Hatsune Miku, which is officially the first music video to record live band members while Hatusne Miku performs at the same time.

)

Crypton Future Media teamed up with the band to help their dream become a reality, bringing with them the knowledge of past concerts and Isao Tomita’s rendition of Ihatov Symphony. Toy’s Factory joined the team alongside famous producer Kz(livetune) to create the new 3D model of Miku, named “14 Model”, as well as produce the vocal track for the song.

img03_1

The process of creating the music video was filled with new technical challenges and innovative ideas that broke new grounds in the world of Vocaloid and digital media alike. Hatsune Miku was set to dance on a uniquely designed cylindrical screen with an array of light-filtering screens and wireless transmitting sensors. The unique stage allowed automatic adjustments of the model’s position horizontally and vertically in real time, granting the film crew the ability to view Miku from several different angles while maintaining the focus on Miku.

A special CD + DVD package can be purchased for $28.34 or $31.06 for the limited edition version through Amazon Japan.

The song can also be purchased through iTunes for $2.43 through the Japanese store, but requires a Japanese account.

MikuMikuDance 9.0.3 Released and New jThree MMD Generator Launched

Image of MikuMikuDance 9.0.3 Interface

The creator of the MikuMikuDance 3D model choreography tool has updated the program past version 9.0, all the way to 9.0.3. The most recent updates bring some much welcome enhancements and features. Some of these include:

■ Physics “on/off” toggle function, and physics “trace” mode (allows you to see physics behavior between frames without needing to play the animation).
■ Physics “on/off” toggle function for individual model bones (helpful for keeping some parts of models rigid during animation, if needed).
■ Shadow detail manipulation in camera/accessory mode, as well as auto shadows based on camera distance.
■ Numerical values can now be entered for facial manipulation (helpful for more accurate adjustments).

This latest version of MikuMikuDance can be downloaded from the official website.

Also recently released by a completely seperate entity named “jThree” is a web-based jquery/javascript plugin called MMD-Generator. It is capable of rendering MikuMikuDance animations within your browser using WebGL animation. The developer says the web application works best on Windows 7 with the latest versions of the Chrome, Firefox or Opera browsers. Mac users may have some luck running the application with Opera.

There are a few demos available directly from the site: Senbonzakura (warning, heavy animation), Melt and a Solar system Simulator. You can also use the tool to load your own MMD models and VMD motion data for camera and models. It also supports the rendering of MP3 and OGG audio. The plugin can be downloaded and run locally from your own system.

The program code is also included and uses an MIT license. There is no documentation or instructions provided yet (which the developer apologizes for). You can expect more updates to this application in the future.

Website: http://www.jthree.jp/
Twitter: https://twitter.com/jThree_jp

EDIT: As soon as I finished this article, it was announced that the web application was taken down due to the discovery of many bugs. The creator apologizes and will try to have them fixed as soon as possible. The demos are still available, however.

Mikucha: An Augumented Reality Photo App For Android Featuring Appearance Miku

A developer by the name of “Mikuture” on twitter is developing a fun application for Android called “Mikucha”, which is an augmented reality photo application that uses the Appearance Miku 3D model. The app title is a coined word that mixes “Miku” with “Pikucha” (picture).

The app is similar to the AR functions found in the previous Domino’s x Hatsune Miku collaboration app, but offers a far wider range of pose options and features. Some notable features include:

■ Auto positioning using the phone’s gyroscope. Miku will stand at the proper angle no matter which way you tilt the phone! This helps make poses easier.
■ Selfie mode. You can use a device’s front-facing camera to take photos of yourself with Miku.

The application is still in closed beta development, and can only be accessed by a few select beta testers. A full release is planned soon, with an English interface option to come later. An iOS version of the application is also planned. Currently, the app supports devices running Android 4.0 and above. Keep up with application updates and news of the full release on Mikuture’s twitter, or stay tuned for the future news post here on Mikufan.

Below is a photo I took with the app earlier today. Want to see more? Check the hashtag #みくちゃ on twitter.

Some of you may recall hearing about or even playing the “Snow Miku AhR” iOS application that was released by Crypton last February during the 2014 Snow Miku festival. Rather than letting the application feel out of season, Crypton has pushed an update that adds a number of new features, and changes the title to “Hatsune Miku AhR”.

Snow Miku AhR was an augmented reality application that allowed you to take photos anywhere with a cute Snow Miku 3D model, as well as enjoy AR “concerts” through your iOS device by using the provided AR marker. Hatsune Miku AhR expands upon this functionality.

What’s new:

■ New title screen artwork by Nanna.
■ A new shop has been added where you can buy additional models and motions, with more to be added later. Several models are already included for free.
■ A rack storage menu where you can quickly access the models you’ve collected.
■ A new AR marker for the updated AR mode will be released soon, please watch for app notifications or updates noting the release.

Hatsune Miku AhR is available for free on all global iTunes stores, and requires devices running iOS 6.1 or greater. Application Page: https://itunes.apple.com/app/snow-miku-ahr/id804642181

The previously announced Mikucha application for Android (now going by the name Mikuture) has finally exited beta testing, and is now available via the Google Play store. The application is still free to use, and now has an English interface option on the home screen. The application filesize has also been optimized, and runs much smoother than earlier versions.

If you previously installed the beta using Deploygate, please remove Mikuture through Deploygate, and remove the Deploygate application if no longer needed. You can now install Mikuture through the Play Store application.

Mikuture, developed by Sorasu, is an augmented reality photo application featuring Appearance Miku, and runs on devices running Android 4.0 and up. An iOS release is planned very soon.

If you are constantly using VocaDB.net like myself to search information on various Vocaloid producers, songs, albums or artists, then you may have experienced how inconvenient using the site on mobile can be. Thankfully, a new mobile app has been released for Android, and possibly soon for Windows Phone (iOS is a possibility).

The VocaDB app presents information in a much more streamlined interface, and is a must-have application for any Vocaloid media enthusiast. It is available for free via the Google Play Store, and requires Android 4.0 and up.

The Digi-Eye augmented reality application that was mentioned in our previous article has been activated, and viewers can now enjoy a “live” performance of Hatsune Miku dancing and singing to a new song composed by Mitchie M.

The application is available globally for iOS, but the Android version is unfortunately region locked to Japan (Sorry Android users!). However, I think the lock was a mistake, and I’m looking into it. I will edit this post with an update if it is changed.

Snapshot of the Oculus Rift Dev Kit 2 in action.

The second revision of the Oculus Rift development kit hasn’t been out long, but the developer CST on Nicovideo already came up with an interesting idea of how to use it. The improved motion sensing of the new dev kit allows for precise head tracking. This allows more realistic interaction within a virtual world, such as sharing a drink with another character.

Combined with the Unity game engine, CST was able to create a program that allows you to enjoy a virtual experience of sharing a drink with Hatsune Miku. “I was always envious of couples sharing drinks, and I was always alone. Now I no longer worry. The future age of sharing straws with Hatsune Miku is here!“, CST commented in the video description.
